Erfurt Change at the top of the German Association of Cities: The Lord Mayor of Münster, Markus Lewe (CDU), was unanimously elected President of the municipal association at the end of the Annual General Meeting in Erfurt on Thursday. According to its own statements, the Association of Cities represents the interests of 3200 cities and municipalities in Germany.

The 56-year-old succeeds Leipzig’s Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD), who led the association for more than two years. Jung was also unanimously elected Vice President by the delegates. Jung and Lewe thus changed their positions on the management committee of the City Council, one of three central municipal associations in Germany.

Lewe, who has been Mayor of Münster since 2009, appealed to the federal and state governments after his election to quickly implement regulations in order to break the force of the fourth wave of corona. “Every day on which 2G does not apply is a wasted day.” The vaccination and boosters should be speeded up, demanded Lewe. “The pressure on the unvaccinated must be increased.”

The Lord Mayor of Eisenach, Katja Wolf (left), was re-elected as one of the deputies of the President.
