Berlin For a year and a half, the Economic Wise Men were without a chair. Now, with Monika Schnitzer, there is a woman at the head of the Advisory Council for the first time. Germany’s most important economic advisory body presented its annual report to the federal government on Wednesday.

In her first interview, Schnitzer has a lot to explain: the surprising proposal for an energy solo, the likelihood of de-industrialization, the required paradigm shift in immigration laws and the change in the council of experts itself.

Schnitzer also justified the proposal for tax increases to the Handelsblatt with a clear signal for overcoming the energy crisis in solidarity. The increases just need to be well designed. “You have to be on target, so you can really only hit the top earners. And they must be clearly limited in time, so they would have to start at the same time as the relief measures and end with them in spring 2024,” says Schnitzer.
