san francisco The US software group Microsoft is redesigning its Windows operating system for use across all categories of end devices. “With Windows 365, we created a product category: the cloud computer,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Tuesday at the product launch.

The new operating system is aimed at corporate customers and is to be operated entirely from the cloud. This should make it possible to work on end devices such as a tablet or smartphone in a similar way to a PC. The structure is similar to the online operating system Chrome OS from Google.

“The boundaries between the PC and the cloud are disappearing,” Nadella announced. The system is intended to adapt to the changing world of work and hybrid work. Microsoft is breaking away from individual device categories. Nadella promised Windows should work seamlessly everywhere.

Microsoft introduced a number of new functions for the new working environment. A focus mode is designed to make concentrated work easier and reduce distractions. This includes a stopwatch, help for planned breaks and a do not disturb mode.

There should be a live transcription across the operating system, which not only converts audio files into text, but can also add subtitles to videos streamed from the Internet. However, it was initially unclear whether this function would be available in languages such as German in addition to English.

Video conferences are to be improved thanks to new camera technologies. Disturbing background noise should be better filtered out in the future using algorithms. The “Eye Contact” function is intended to create the impression that a person is looking directly into the camera. In addition, the background should be better blurred if desired and a person should remain in focus when they move through the room.

Nadella and his team also present numerous changes in the area of cyber security. The “Defender Smartscreen” function is intended to warn users not to enter their access data on dubious applications or websites. The “Smart App Control” tool uses artificial intelligence to scan the software code on the computer for harmful functions and warn users.

Microsoft charges between $31 and $66 per computer per month for the Windows 365 Business operating system. The company initially left open when the offer will start.
