Mexican official charged with corruption in US court

Before a jury in Brooklyn, Genaro García Luna, secretary of security from 2006 to 2012, has to answer for the accusation that in his office he was not so much fighting organized crime as helping the Sinaloa cartel to establish itself as the dominant syndicate to establish.

According to the prosecution, he received enormous amounts of bribes. García Luna also worked closely with the United States, which is why Washington’s cooperation with the 54-year-old at the time also plays an indirect role in the process.

As security minister, García Luna, an engineer by training, was responsible for the fight against the cartels launched by former President Felipe Calderón, which brought nothing but violence, death and suffering to Mexico.
