Dusseldorf The looming economic downturn is already noticeable in the order books of management consultants. Those in charge of the three leading international consulting firms McKinsey, Boston Consulting (BCG) and Bain report more amicably than ever that business calls for help are increasing.

And the experts at Germany’s largest strategy consultancy, Roland Berger, and the influential restructuring consultancy in Germany, Alix Partners, are registering more and more orders to cut costs, optimize cash flow or even lay off staff.

“2023 will be very uncomfortable. There has never been a time when we have received so many comprehensive and urgent requests for support as we do now,” says BCG senior partner and head of the Transform restructuring unit, Jochen Schönfelder.

For 2023, Schönfelder is therefore expecting staff reduction programs for the first time in a long time: “They will not be economically significant because the labor market will eagerly absorb those who have been laid off. For the individual and from a business point of view, however, they are of course a factor.”
