Brussels Hardly anyone has shaped EU politics as much as Mario Draghi in recent years. As head of the European Central Bank (ECB), Draghi held the euro zone together in the sovereign debt crisis, and as Italian Prime Minister he steered his country through the pandemic.

Three months ago, Draghi’s political career seemed to have come to an end. His governing coalition in Rome broke up and he resigned. A coalition led by post-fascist Giorgia Meloni now governs the country.
