Margot Käßmann – A question of attitude – politics

One of my daughters bought a dog. The puppy is cute, everyone is blown away.

We used to have dogs in the family too. First a puppy, later an older one from the animal shelter. And I have to say in retrospect: We didn’t raise the puppy consistently.

Today there is a puppy school, dog school, dog trainer. Good this way! Often enough dogs bark at me while jogging. The master or mistress then admonishes him – usually without any effect. If the little guy is brought up with my daughter from the start, it will help him orientate himself. And the other family members know how to deal with him.

Of course, as an addition to the family, a dog cannot be compared with a child! But why is there actually no children’s school for parents? Raising children is really not child’s play.

Not everything used to be better just because children were raised with beating. But some things are harder today. Many family lives are isolated, some parents have to raise all alone. Good orientation would be helpful.

This is especially true in view of the new media. What should my child be allowed to watch and for how long? At what age does a cell phone make sense? It is crucial that children know that they are loved and accepted.

But loving children means: encouraging them AND setting limits for them. Promote your talents AND give them a reliable framework. So they can grow up with confidence and without fear.

When parents gain security in matters of upbringing, it also helps children. Parent counseling for everyone, that would be a good future project.

As the Bible says: “Do not provoke your children to anger” (Ephesians 6: 4).

Stay safe!
