Dusseldorf In view of the significantly increased prices in the supermarkets, many consumers can hardly afford to buy groceries. This is shown by a study of more than 600,000 receipts that the market research company Smhaggle evaluated exclusively for the Handelsblatt.

According to these figures, the average household expenditure for groceries in June was already 103 euros above the budget that was actually available for groceries, according to the Federal Statistical Office. This means that the shortfall is almost twice as high as in April, when expenditure was already 59 euros above budget.

Expenditure on food is set in relation to disposable income. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the average net household income is 3661 euros per month. Of this, 15.4 percent, i.e. 556.25 euros, is spent on food, beverages and tobacco products.
