Paris, Dusseldorf The scandal surrounding the massive evasion of dividend taxes reaches the French capital. Since Tuesday, almost 200 investigators have been searching several banks in the Paris financial district of La Defense, including the industry heavyweights BNP Paribas and Société Générale.

According to information from the Handelsblatt, the investigators are also visiting HSBC. The multinational universal bank controls its business for continental Europe from Paris.

Also affected: Natixis, the investment bank of the French savings banks and cooperative banks, and the investment bank Exane, a subsidiary of BNP Paribas. The banks affected did not want to comment on the measure or did not initially report back. The French financial prosecutor’s office confirmed the searches but did not name names.

The reason for the raids is primarily suspected cum-cum business. The term refers to the trading of shares with dividend entitlement.
