Lufthansa’s plans to take over ITA Airways are shaky

Frankfurt, Rome Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr thought he was almost there with the Italian state airline ITA Airways: the documents had been submitted, there were first expressions of sympathy from government circles for the offer from Lufthansa and the Swiss shipping company MSC. Getting started seemed like a formality. But then the government crisis broke out in Rome, Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigned – and Lufthansa’s plans for Italy began to falter.

The reason is Giorgia Meloni. She has led the post-fascist Fratelli d’Italia party since 2014. If you believe the latest polls, the “Italian brothers” have a good chance of winning the new elections on September 25th. Meloni could forge a right-wing alliance under her leadership.
