Looking for a job

The labor market is currently sending mixed signals.

Dusseldorf When Christian Mayer goes looking for a job in early summer, he doesn’t notice that talent is rare and that candidates should be able to choose positions. “I was extremely dissatisfied with my employer,” says the communications expert. For months, Mayer sent out two or three applications a week – with a sobering response.

Companies have repeatedly “ghosted” him, i.e. practically ignored him, he says. To date, the 31-year-old has received no response to an application to a cruise company at the end of July, despite inquiries.

However, at his current employer, an aviation company, it is difficult to apply for internal positions, says Mayer. After an interview, for example, he only received a rejection when asked. “I ask myself what would have happened if I hadn’t asked.” If skilled workers are so scarce, Mayer asks himself, “why do so many companies make so little effort?” The Handelsblatt has investigated this question.
