Berlin Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) wants to propose to his country colleagues to extend the deadline for submitting property tax returns. “The number of declarations is still too low,” Lindner told the Handelsblatt.

The tax consultants are busy with the final accounts of the corona aid, and there is also a need for advice from companies because of energy prices. “The burden is too great. We have to give space,” said Lindner.

For the reform of the property tax, 36 million plots of land and real estate must be revalued. Since July 1, citizens and companies have been called upon to submit a property tax return within four months; the deadline ends on October 31. But so far, according to information from the finance ministries, only a quarter to a third of landowners have submitted their tax returns. Lindner therefore now wants to extend the deadline by a “foreseeable period of time”.
