Layoffs at Twitter & co – specialists fear for visas

san francisco Amazon, Meta, Twitter, Salesforce: Technology companies from Silicon Valley recently announced they would cut around 25,000 jobs. Amazon initiated the layoffs on Thursday morning. Losing a job can have serious consequences for foreign skilled workers – including those from Germany.

Your residency status in the US often depends on your job, says Sven Thorsten Potthoff, head of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. If professionals lose their job with a particular employer, they may be forced to leave the country.

H-1B is the name of the visa category that employers can use for qualified specialists from abroad. This visa is widely used in the technology sector. Technology professionals accounted for approximately two-thirds of all H-1B visa recipients in 2019, according to data from the US Department of Immigration.
