Berlin Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach and the President of the Robert Koch Institute, Lothar Wieler, have not yet given the all-clear on the coronavirus pandemic. “We are clearly at the beginning of an autumn and winter wave,” said Lauterbach on Friday in Berlin. But: “We are better prepared than last fall.”

At a press conference with the minister, Wieler also emphasized: “The pandemic is not over yet.” The good news is that there has not yet been a massive increase in hospital admissions. However, the number of new infections in Germany continued to increase.

According to the RKI figures from Friday, the number of new infections registered in Germany within the past 24 hours was 96,367. The so-called seven-day incidence rose to 466.0 from 409.6 the previous day. The RKI also reported 140 other deaths related to the virus.

The known total for Germany is 149,948. Wieler and Lauterbach pointed out that the number of unreported cases is probably much higher than usual. Lauterbach said he assumes that three times as many people are actually infected as there are registered cases.

The fact that a new wave is building up can also be observed in other European countries, said Lauterbach. Corona is currently no longer so much in the foreground of the public. However, everything must be done to avoid an “additional stressful situation”, he emphasized with regard to the Ukraine war and the energy crisis.

Lauterbach warns the countries

The wave will not be limited on its own, the federal states must also apply possible measures in the new Infection Protection Act that comes into force on Saturday, the minister warned and specifically mentioned the obligation to wear masks indoors. Otherwise there is a risk of staff shortages in the critical infrastructure in the coming weeks.

Wieler pointed out that there is currently an increased increase in respiratory infections that are not only caused by the corona virus. The numbers are “significantly higher” than in previous years.

In the past week alone, 7.7 million people in Germany were newly ill, and 1.2 million people had therefore consulted a doctor. Wieler pointed out that in addition to the corona vaccination, there was also a flu vaccination. Both hosts could be administered simultaneously.
