Large German banks are going to the cloud – but not to Amazon

The Amazon subsidiary AWS is a leading cloud provider. The large German banks, however, prefer to use the cloud services of their competitors Google and Microsoft.

Frankfurt, Düsseldorf Video conferences, electronic programs to prevent money laundering, experiments with artificial intelligence – the digitization of German banks is moving. This cannot be achieved with the old IT, this knowledge has now matured everywhere.

An exclusive survey by the Handelsblatt now shows: Eleven out of twelve large German banks cooperate with public cloud services, i.e. access external computing capacities that are mostly made available by so-called “hyperscalers” such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon. Market leader Amazon hardly gets a chance in this country.

Of the twelve major banks surveyed, only HSBC Trinkhaus & Burkhardt states that they use the services of the Amazon subsidiary AWS – in addition to Google and Microsoft. The other banks mainly use the Microsoft Azure Cloud and the Google Cloud.
