Berlin The previous State Secretary for Finance Jörg Kukies will be the top advisor to the new Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). In the Chancellery, Kukies will not only head the finance and economic policy department, as is already known, but also the European policy department. The Handelsblatt learned this from government circles.
This combination is extraordinary. Angela Merkel (CDU) always had two advisers, most recently Uwe Corsepius was responsible for Europe and Lars-Hendrik Röller was responsible for finance and economics. Röller was also the Chancellor’s Sherpa, who prepared the international G7 and G20 summits for her.
Kukies will now take on all three tasks for Scholz: European advisor, economic advisor and Sherpa in one person. This should increase the already high workload for the 53-year-old.
Up to now, Kukies was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance, responsible for European and financial market policy. There, the official with the SPD party book has earned Scholz’s trust over the past few years.
