Berlin At the online fashion retailer Zalando, there is great unrest after the announcement of mass layoffs – dissatisfaction with the management is growing among the workforce. “We don’t know anything. That’s frustrating,” says an employee in front of the Berlin headquarters of the Handelsblatt. Many questions are still open. The plans were announced a week ago. A colleague adds that nothing has been decided yet.

The trade union secretary responsible, Franziska Foullong, criticizes that there is a risk of uncertainty for the employees for weeks or even months. The manner in which the layoffs were communicated did not go well.

Zalando has announced that it will cut several hundred jobs, but has left the details open. It is the first time in the company’s 15-year history that there have been layoffs on a large scale. Europe’s largest fashion portal is now suffering from the slump in consumption after soaring in the corona pandemic. Many consumers want to shop more in-store rather than just online.
