Japan makes itself independent of supply chains with TSMC chip factory

Tokyo For months, construction noise has disturbed the quiet in the fields of the Japanese town of Kikuyo. Between cattle farms and rice fields there should be one chip factory of the Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC, costing around eight billion euros. From 2024, it will supply Japan’s automotive and electronics industries.

Mayor Mitsuo Goto is aware of the national importance of the project: The investment is not only good for the community, he says. “The project will also play an important role in our economic security and the Japanese chip industry.”

The former chip superpower Japan has succeeded in building the plant, which Germany and other European countries are also trying to achieve. TSMC is the largest contract manufacturer and technology leader in the world. In an era where pandemics, economic conflicts and wars are disrupting supply chains, one concept is gaining traction: “economic security”.
