Berlin Before Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) visits Rome on Monday, Italy is pushing for closer integration of the EU financial architecture. “We have to ensure that Europe’s economy is on par with the USA and China,” said the Italian ambassador to Germany, Armando Varricchio, of the newspaper “Die Welt”.

“It would be rather strange to strengthen the EU’s foreign and security policy if the European economy is not as solid and as united as we would like it to be,” said Varricchio. He described the Corona reconstruction fund, for which the EU is jointly borrowing for the first time, as a fundamental change. At the same time, he emphasized that it was not about states having to pay for the debts of others on a permanent basis.

Scholz wants to meet his colleague Mario Draghi in Rome on Monday. One topic is likely to be the EU’s future debt rules. The corona reconstruction fund with a volume of 750 billion was launched as a one-time emergency measure in the corona crisis.
