Interview with the first black female minister in East Germany

Berlin Doreen Denstädt knows the feeling of being the first and usually also the only one. Privilege and burden at the same time. “Even as a child, everyone turned around when I walked into the room.”

During her time as the only black policewoman in Thuringia, she was often approached by children with a migration background, says the police chief. It was mostly girls who suddenly felt represented. But this time the response was overwhelming: “An unbelievable number of people who are proud of me and also have hopes for me have come forward,” says Denstädt.

On Wednesday morning, Denstädt became Thuringia’s new justice, migration and consumer protection minister. The 45-year-old is the first and only black state minister in East Germany.
