Internet: data toll – EU Commission wants to ask “Big Tech” to pay soon

Hamburg, Berlin The European Commission is about to take another hit against big tech companies from the USA. Companies like Netflix, Meta or Youtube, which cause a large part of the data traffic in Europe, should contribute to the infrastructure costs of the telecoms industry. It is about billions that could flow into the expansion of fiber optic lines and modern 5G mobile networks in Europe by 2030.

According to information from the Handelsblatt from industry and government circles, the Commission intends to present a model in the coming year that would regulate such payments. The legislative process could start before Christmas with the start of a “public consultation”.
