Intel seeks compensation for canceled fine
Intel’s lawsuit filed by the European Commission in 2009; Dell, HP and Lenovo to major producers, includingspecial discounts” was the application. Allegedly, Intel, computer companies AMD demanded to use Intel hardware instead of preferring it.
Intel, which was found to have given special discounts to manufacturers from 2002 to 2007, was fined $ 1.2 billion in antitrust. However, with the decision taken last January, Intel’s defense was justified and the result of the antitrust lawsuit in 2009 was set aside. EU, $1.2 billion after defeat in court returned the fine to Intel.
The tech giant still doesn’t seem happy with this decision. In the new compensation lawsuit, which was started five months later, Intel stated that it wanted $625 million from the European Commission. The company applied to the EU General Court and stated that it wanted to be paid “compensation for the damage suffered”.
The amount Intel is demanding is more than half of the fine. However, Intel denied this claim. The European Central Bank’s 1.25% refinancing stated that it is based on the equivalent interest rate. According to the company’s statement, although the interest rate increased to 3.5 percent from 2009 to 2022, it was based on the old value.
At Intel, we believe our actions regarding compensation are lawful and do not harm competition. The semiconductor industry has never been more competitive than it is today and we look forward to continuing to invest in Europe.
While the lawsuit has been going on for more than 10 years, it looks like it will continue for a few more years. According to the latest information, the European Commission is preparing an appeal to reinstate the penalty imposed on Intel.
