Cologne Ford CEO Jim Farley doubts the digitization strategy of the European automotive industry. “Europe is too focused on reducing CO2 and not enough on the digital transformation of cars,” Farley said in an interview with Handelsblatt. The advances in electrification in Europe are great and correct, and electrification is necessary, “but it alone is not enough”.

When it comes to digitization, European manufacturers could fall behind new Chinese competitors. “The gravitational center of our industry is moving eastward, which is China,” added Farley. The software there is much more advanced than in western industrialized countries. As a result, new electric cars with a high degree of digitization could be developed faster in the People’s Republic than in the rest of the world.
