Inflation in Germany remains at 8.7 percent in February

Frankfurt, Dusseldorf German inflation is proving surprisingly persistent. In February, the consumer price index (CPI) of the Federal Statistical Office was 8.7 percent above the previous year’s level, as in January. The expectations of the experts were a little lower at 8.5 percent in advance.

Inflation figures for France and Spain were already higher than forecast on Tuesday. In France, inflation rose to 7.2 percent in February and in Spain to 6.1 percent.

The figures disappoint the hopes and expectations of many market participants, the high inflation of the past year will soon come to an end and with it the pressure on the central banks to raise interest rates further.

Instead, the strong inflation is now intensifying the debate about the further course of the European Central Bank (ECB). The latter last raised interest rates at the beginning of February and signaled another sharp hike for March. Then she wants to reassess the situation.
