Bangkok With one of the largest investment projects in the country’s history, India is hoping for a breakthrough as a high-tech country. The Taiwanese electronics group Foxconn wants to spend almost 20 billion dollars together with an Indian partner to build one of the first semiconductor plants on the subcontinent in the western Indian state of Gujarat. A gigantic industrial complex is planned, which will cover an area of 1.6 million square meters and will employ 100,000 people after completion.
“The improved infrastructure and the government’s active and strong support encourage us to locate a semiconductor factory here,” said Brian Ho, who oversees Foxconn’s chip business, in September. Construction of the industrial plant, which will also include display production, is scheduled to start in the coming year – and go into operation in 2024.
