Berlin Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck has just recalled his Secretary of State for Energy, Patrick Graichen, and now another of his top officials is being criticized. State Secretary for Economic Affairs Udo Philipp holds shares in four companies, including start-ups. At the same time, he is responsible for the areas of digital and innovation policy in the ministry.

It is obvious that there is a risk of a conflict of interest in this constellation. It is all the more astonishing how awkwardly the economic department of Habeck deals with this case. Only when the media reported and there was great public pressure did Philipp disclose his holdings.

The crucial question for Habeck and his state secretary is now whether that was all. New reports at least raise doubts. Accordingly, Philip is said to have recommended his minister to an advisor in whose fund he had invested money. And so the impression arises again that the Ministry of Economic Affairs only admits what threatens to become public anyway.
