Dusseldorf For many employees, the salary is the decisive criterion when changing jobs. It’s not just a matter of job position, personnel responsibility or professional experience. The region in which the company is located is also an important factor in the level of earnings.

In Germany it makes a big difference whether someone works in Stuttgart or in Leipzig. This is confirmed by current data from the “Kununu Salary Check 2023”, which is available exclusively to the Handelsblatt. The head of the employer rating platform, Nina Zimmermann, says: “In southern Germany there are many large companies that have not only shaped the cities themselves. They also set salary standards there.”

Michael Kind, compensation expert at the management consultancy Kienbaum, also observes these regional differences: “Frankfurt is the main location for many banks, while large insurance companies are based in Munich. That has a strong impact on salary levels.” But there are other cities with above-average earnings that might surprise workers who are willing to move.
