The sad and romantic love story “Supernova” should actually start in German cinemas as early as 2020. Corona thwarted the lender’s bill. Now the time has finally come: on Thursday (October 14th) the film will also be in our cinemas.
Colin Firth (61, “The King’s Speech”) and Stanley Tucci (60, “The Devil Wears Prada”) play a gay couple in it.
That’s what it’s about
Pianist Sam (Colin Firth) and his longtime partner Tusker (Stanley Tucci) are still as passionately in love as they were at the beginning of their relationship. But in the two years since Tusker was diagnosed with young dementia, their lives together had to change. They know they have very little time together.
In the fall they are planning a road trip through England while Tusker can still travel. They want to get together again with friends and family members and visit the places of their past.
But: The little streets in the idyllic Lake District in Northern England have to be found first. So Tusker lively teases while the rather sad Sam takes care of the right way.
During the trip in a converted VW bus, their love for one another is put to the test like never before. You set out on a sentimental journey that also consists of many farewells.
Well acted drama
The British director Harry Macqueen (37) has presented a silent drama with “Supernova” that revolves around the big, existential questions.

Can you still love a partner who may no longer recognize you? Sam definitely wants to stay with his friend, even if the helplessness in the face of the advancing illness is written on his face.
The main actors: Both straight, but with a lot of experience with gay roles.
For an accomplished actor and heartbreaker like the British Colin Firth (“A Single Man”), the role of the caring protector is of course not a problem, even if he is supposed to show the seriousness of the situation a little too often with an ominous look. The American Stanley Tucci got the better role: He’s allowed to show humor and make jokes, especially because he’s so bad.
Unfortunately, the viewer learns far too little about this couple, their previous history remains vague.
