“If The Main Exit Point Is…” –

Doğu Taşkıran, who started programming at the age of 11 and wrote the first computer game at the age of 12, is involved in military simulation projects at ASELSAN and HAVELSAN after graduating from METU Computer Engineering. After making airplane and tank simulators, he decides to follow his “only dream” computer games. One of the simulators Taşkıran made was appreciated by the computer game giant Electronic Arts’ studio in Vancouver and they made an offer. After working at Electronic Arts for three and a half years, Taşkıran is transferred to another giant game company, Ubisoft.

As the studio director of Ubisoft Vancouver, Taşkıran joins the team that opened the Toronto office of the same company in 2012. Taşkıran, who said, “Microsoft reached out to me when I was a little tired from the gaming industry”, starts working on a brand new operating system that will replace the Windows version of that period and assumes the leadership of this team.

Taşkıran, who stepped into the world of entrepreneurship after his job at Microsoft, is establishing a studio working on virtual and augmented reality with his brother in Canada. They completely digitize their sales and marketing operations by making virtual tours of their unfinished projects in the real estate sector “through Hollywood quality visuals”.

Taşkıran says, “We made the first architectural application with virtual and augmented reality applications before the Metaverse was even there”, and explains that they started off with a Web2-based project that supports the creative economy: “It enables a photographer in India to sell directly to an advertising agency in Moscow. We have created a structure that enables the exchange of creative products based on Web2 and working with credit cards. But at that time, the words blockchain or NFT were not in vogue.”

Speaking exclusively to Kriptokoin.com, OIX’s founder and CEO Doğu Taşkıran shared his insights on the NFT market and his predictions for the future of digital art.

“A mix of Instagram and OpenSea”

How was OIX founded? What makes you different from other NFT marketplaces?

As we were due to launch in 2021, we realized that Web3 technologies were coming our way. We decided to migrate the infrastructure as it is to Web3. We set up an NFT marketplace project running on Ethereum and Polygon. Our difference from others is that this is a social network. You can think of it as a mix of Instagram and OpenSea. We have established a platform where every generated shipment can be sold, exchanged and traded with cryptocurrencies. We consider this as the social and economic infrastructure of the metaverse. If we consider several pillars of the Metaverse: Internet of Things (IoT), virtual and augmented reality, cryptocurrencies that provide the economy of this and a social network that facilitates interaction with them.

“We show interest in developing countries”

How are things going in OIX?

We started with Ethereum and Polygon. At that time, Ethereum was not yet proof-of-stake, but a proof-of-work blockchain. As it was released in December of 2021, some celebrities started getting involved in our project. If you remember at that time, there was a pretty bad perception about the energy expenditure of proof-of-work about cryptocurrencies. A famous person was going to release NFT, but when he released it on Ethereum, they requested Polygon to avoid negative comments about him. We quickly transformed into a multi-chain platform. While creating a product on the Ethereum network cost 100 dollars, it could be done for 60-70 cents in Polygon. This allowed us to focus on emerging economies and economies with an interest in crypto. Our thesis was held in Latin America, Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. 95 percent of the products on our platform are produced on the Polygon network.

Which regions appeal to you the most?

Latin America, North Africa and Eastern Europe. Türkiye is also in this market. Now we have turned our route to Southeast Asia. The places where Polygon is kept the most, especially in India. Besides Polygon, we have added Binance and Avalanche blockchains. We are currently on our way with four different Ethereum-based chains. As of next month, we signed an agreement with a network called Scale. With this, we will completely eliminate transaction costs.

“There is no possibility of valuation of NFT without brand value”

What do you think about the current state of the NFT market? Almost everyone we talked to in the sector expected an increase like April-May at the beginning of this year, but this did not happen. How do you evaluate?

I expect a movement in the NFTs and crypto market by July-August 2023. The main starting point will find the beginning of 2024. The benefits that NFT provides to the user, I expect the story to turn there. In other words, it is not possible for an NFT without an audience or marketing value to rise. Therefore, it will become even more meaningful with the launch of NFT by famous brands or influencers. For example, the entry of Starbucks, Nike, Adidas or Louis Vuitton into the NFT field will increase adoption. It will not be easy for an NFT with no brand value to come out as a collection and then be valued. The benefit created by the launch of an NFT by a very famous artist will continue, but if we want to create an NFT out of nothing and want it to be valued, the only way to do it is to gather those around us who believe in it.

What do you think about the Turkish market? Is there enough interest?

The Turkish market is very important to us. We see Turkey at the center of crypto and blockchain. Turkey is a model country in terms of both the cultural axis and the technologies produced in the Turkic Republics, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Its economic structure is also very similar to Latin America. In countries where inflation is high, such as Venezuela and Argentina, people try to improve their financial situation by trying different methods. It doesn’t make sense to ignore it. Türkiye is one of the countries with the most cryptocurrencies in the world.

“The majority of those who do NFT with artificial intelligence are from Turkey”

Do you think that NFT is used as an investment tool in Turkey?

It is earned by trading rather than investing. The startups that are beautiful in Turkey are somewhat naive because they are art-oriented. It is possible to make money by selling good works abroad, not here. As a matter of fact, one of the founders of Bored Ape is Turkish. A lot of Turkish artists started to join our platform. But the problem here is that NFT is not used as an investment tool. So secondary sales are low. On the other hand, the creation process with artificial intelligence has also accelerated. A lot of artificial intelligence products have accumulated on our platform. We see that most of them come from Turkey.

Do you think that originality is lost in NFT works using artificial intelligence?

I think that standing against artificial intelligence is equivalent to the status quo. Change is inevitable. I know some painters, they repeat their paintings and have students paint their backgrounds. There are those who do. I think it makes more sense to think of artificial intelligence as a tool and use it to the extent that the work we want to do will take the workload off me.

What do you think about Turkish digital artists? Are there any promising Turkish digital artists that we do not know about but who are working on your platform?

Apart from names such as Doruk Seymen, Refik Anadol and Ender Diril who appeal to the whole world and do incredible good works, I would like to share a few remarkable names: Vural Şerifoğlu, Berker Dalmış, as well as Turkish artists with the pseudonyms ersnts and wontanara, I think they are promising.
