Frankfurt The day on which the deadline for submitting the property tax return is fast approaching: January 31, 2023. This date already includes a three-month grace period; the return was originally due at the end of October 2022. And yet: by mid-January, not even 60 percent of the declarations had been received. Anyone who submits a tax return too late risks late penalties, a fine of up to 25,000 euros and a tax estimate.

In the case of the property tax return, however, the tax authorities could initially be lenient. Florian Köbler, head of the tax union, announced in the Handelsblatt a few days ago that those affected would initially receive reminders. The taxpayers’ association expects that this reminder letter will set a grace period and that surcharges for late payment and other penalties will only be incurred once this period has expired.

Taxpayers play it safe if they submit an application for an extension of the deadline in good time. The Handelsblatt explains how this is convincingly justified and how much delay is in it.
