Dusseldorf The supply of raw materials is of central importance for the plans of the German electric car manufacturers. Because without minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel or manganese, it will no longer be possible to produce a car in the future. Battery cell production is an important growth area for many manufacturers: VW wants to build six gigafactories in Europe by 2030, which should be sufficient for a total production of around five million electric cars.

In order to supply the factories with the necessary materials, VW recently concluded a joint venture with the Belgian raw materials group Umicore, which initially wants to rely on deposits within Europe before recycling should play a larger role by the end of the decade.

The group is in line with the trend: more and more companies are currently looking at how they can increase the proportion of recycled raw materials in their products.
