Berlin “I was afraid that at some point I would be exposed as an imposter because it turns out that I have no sound knowledge.” Christiane Arp, the former head of German Vogue, said in a recent interview with the news magazine Spiegel. Arp is one of many successful people who doubt themselves despite an exemplary career.

Other prominent like-minded people include the physicist Albert Einstein and the former First Lady Michelle Obama. Both spoke publicly about the fear of being overestimated by others and eventually being exposed as a scammer.

Experts have coined a term for this phenomenon: imposter syndrome. It is estimated that between 40 and 70 percent of all adults have already experienced it. It can happen to anyone.
