How to keep track of property tax chaos

The property tax trouble started in July – and won’t end until January 2023, no prophetic gifts needed for that. Because that is the period in which owners have to remeasure 36 million properties in Germany and send the results to their tax offices.

If you miss the deadline, you risk a late payment penalty. This amounts to 0.25 percent of the assessed tax for each month started, at least 25 euros. Anyone who was the owner of the property on the key date of January 1, 2022 must surrender.

Whereby that is almost one of the smaller annoyances in connection with the entire property tax reform. It causes frustration nationwide: because it is not very easy to understand, because the data has to be recorded in an absurdly complicated manner, because the true extent of the future tax burden is not foreseeable.
