How to get as much money back as possible from the tax office

Dusseldorf “Same procedure as every year” – what applies to Miss Sophie and her butler James in the sketch “Dinner for One” can in principle also be applied to the tax return: Every year you collect receipts, donation receipts and craftsmen’s invoices. Attempts are being made to exhaust allowances and deduct home office, childcare costs or tuition fees.

Everyone wants to reduce their own tax burden to a minimum and maybe even get some money back from the state. From a purely statistical point of view, it is worth submitting a tax return: According to the latest data from the Federal Statistical Office, the average tax refund in Germany is 1072 euros.

“Especially for those who are not obliged to file a tax return, all the alarm bells should go off,” says Handelsblatt financial correspondent Laura de la Motte in the new episode of Handelsblatt Today. Because that means that the state is quite convinced that in these cases it has already collected enough taxes – or even too much.
