Dusseldorf Jürgen Hesse can confidently be described as an “application luminary”. For more than 40 years, the 71-year-old has been writing books with his co-author Hans Christian Schrader about working life and, above all, about job applications. The two applicants also coach.

The widespread shortage of staff means that candidates can present themselves more confidently and set new priorities – and that HR managers forgive some things that were previously considered no-gos.

But what does this development mean for the feared opponent of many applicants – the cover letter? In the Handelsblatt interview, Jürgen Hesse reveals what an excellent cover letter looks like today, when one is needed at all, how candidates can already collect plus points in the cover letter – and what they can learn from love letters.
