Zurich EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is sending clear signals with the program of her transatlantic trip. She discussed security policy with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Tuesday before visiting a lithium battery recycling company. In talks with US President Joe Biden in Washington on Friday, cooperation in securing supply chains for green technologies is on the agenda alongside the Ukraine war.

Your agenda shows that the supply of critical raw materials and the protection of supply chains for key industries are now just as high a priority as national defense. In addition, more and more partnerships are being formed along traditional military alliances.

Especially since Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the gas supply freeze and the sanctions against the Russian oil sector, the central importance of raw material security has become apparent, says Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Handelsblatt. “Today’s situation underscores that energy systems are at significant risk from over-reliance on a single supplier for key raw materials.”
