Vienna The “Offensive Guard” recruitment posters are currently seen all over Ukraine as part of the preparations for the Ukrainian counter-offensive. Eight volunteer brigades are soon to fight for the liberation of the occupied territories. They are called “Storm”, “Steel Cordon” and “Border” or are named after the rock massif Kara Dag in Crimea and the patriotic anthem “Oh, red snowball”.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, 28,000 interested parties have so far reported that the planned target has almost been reached. However, there are also reports that recruitment is sometimes sluggish. The costly marketing of the new units alone shows that the volunteers don’t stand in line.

The formation of additional reserves is militarily necessary for the forthcoming counter-offensive. Because Ukraine must reckon with considerable losses, which will add to the previously estimated 100,000 to 120,000 dead and injured. Kiev’s planned counter-offensive could begin in late spring.
