How the German Ben Kauler is doing in Bachmut

Berlin Ten weeks ago, the Tagesspiegel reported on the German Ben Kauler (name changed), who has been in Ukraine since February 25, 2022 and is fighting against the Russian invaders as a member of the Ukrainian army. Here he tells how he has been doing since our conversation in November 2022.

In recent weeks you have been deployed several times in the hard-fought Bachmut. What did you do there?
My team and I were used as “QRF”, which means “quick reaction force”. So we stand by as a reserve and are dispatched in armored vehicles when comrades on the ground are in trouble. Then we try to get them out. In one case, a Ukrainian unit came under heavy fire and lost around 20 soldiers out of 50. The survivors called for reinforcements, we rushed to them, and then retreated together.
