Berlin Pierce Bush fights back tears as he speaks about his grandfather, former US President George HW Bush. “He was a wise man and always saw Germany as a close partner,” he said at a reception in the former GDR State Council building. Pierce Bush is representing his family there. In honor of Bush senior, the private Berlin business school ESMT is remodeling the first floor of the building and has named it after him.

The foundation of Bush Sr. and First Lady Barbara Bush has supported the expansion of the university with a donation. Foundation head Max Angerholzer honors the ex-president as a pioneer of German unity. During his presidency between 1989 and 1993, he negotiated reunification with the other victorious powers.
