Brussels, Berlin Wholesale electricity was extremely cheap on Wednesday night. A megawatt hour could be had for one cent. A Tesla Model 3 could be charged at least 13 times with this amount of electricity. But these prices have not yet reached households. Driving a kilometer in an electric car is therefore hardly cheaper than driving a kilometer in a petrol engine.

To this end, the Federal Cabinet passed the “Act to Restart the Digitization of the Energy Transition” on Wednesday. Above all, it envisages that intelligent electricity meters, so-called “smart meters”, come into many households. These devices represent the “core of the digital energy infrastructure”, said Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens).

The new electricity meters are no longer read, but can send their measured values ​​to the second. The following points make it clear how this can lead to lower prices and a faster energy transition.
