How Putin is fueling ethnic minorities for his war

It’s a question that has been worrying observers of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine for months: Does President Vladimir Putin have to order a general mobilization in order to achieve his goals? He still shies away from it. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for him to find soldiers who will voluntarily go into battle.

In the past few weeks, the Kremlin has therefore taken further steps to increase combat effectiveness in the short term: The Russian military is setting up massive new battalions of volunteer soldiers from ethnic minorities, reports the US think tank “Institute for the Study of War” (ISW). These minorities are apparently “less important” than ethnic Russians – and cheaper. There are a total of 85 minority groups on Russian territory.
