Munich In Germany, 8.7 million people have private health insurance. And for one in three privately insured people, the insurance premium will increase this year. The Central Association of Private Health Insurance announced this in autumn 2022.

In individual cases, the contribution can increase by double-digit percentages. There are also tariffs whose premium does not change for a long time, but then increases sharply.

On average, the costs for health insurance cover increase by around three percent. That’s less than in 2022, when premiums increased by an average of 4 percent, and even less than in 2021, when premiums increased by an average of 8 percent. But the three percent is only an average.

The Handelsblatt explains why the contributions are rising and what private patients can then do to make their insurance cheaper.
