Frankfurt When Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) recently answered questions from citizens at the federal government’s open day, a boy wanted to know from him: “Are you rich?” Scholz replied: “If you consider how much people earn on average, then yes.”
Politicians have a hard time with such questions. In an interview a few years ago, CDU leader Friedrich Merz, after all a millionaire, counted himself among the “upper middle class”.
However, the question of when you are rich in Germany is not that easy to answer. In addition, there are different results depending on whether wealth or income is considered.
