How investors with small savings should invest their money now

Dusseldorf Energy and food costs continue to rise in Germany, and the inflation rate in Germany was 7.9 percent in August. This worries many investors and makes them less willing to invest. In times of fluctuating exchange rates, many prefer to put their money in an account. On the one hand because interest rates are rising there, on the other hand because it is then available at any time. This is also shown by current figures from the Gesellschaft für Verbraucherforschung (GfK): In August, the Germans’ desire to save increased by 17.6 percent compared to the previous month.

However, wealth manager Gerd Kommer says that investing in times of high inflation and fluctuating prices makes just as much sense as in calmer times. In the podcast he talks to Luisa Bomke about why investing is also worthwhile for investors with small assets.

Investors with little savings in particular now have more investment options. “Technical progress and general developments in the stock market environment make it possible to set up savings plans with small sums,” explains Kommer. However, the founder of the wealth management company of the same name warns: “The stock market is a structure that is subject to intense fluctuations. If major macro shocks occur, such as a war or a rise in interest rates, the stock market reacts with a slump or dip.” Kommer sees an opportunity to mitigate such slumps by investing in ETFs. Due to their wide spread, they absorb the fluctuations better. However, investors must be clear: “Vulnerabilities and returns are directly linked.”

Also: The Volkswagen supervisory board has approved the IPO of Porsche AG. The Stuttgart carmaker had already announced the project in February. Due to the outbreak of the Ukraine war, however, it was unclear for a long time whether the IPO was feasible. The Porsche IPO is now to be initiated in the autumn. In the Handelsblatt Today podcast, Handelsblatt automotive expert Stefan Menzel explains why the IPO is taking place after all and what investors should be prepared for when investing.
