Riga In the open country, the snowy landscape, soldiers demonstrate the use of tanks, machine guns, fighter jets. The images, broadcast by the Belarusian Defense Ministry’s television channel VoyenTV, show a joint military exercise between Russia and Belarus. It started last Monday and is expected to continue until the end of the month.
The show of force is stoking concerns in many places: that Russia could involve the military of ally Belarus even more in the war against Ukraine in the future. Afraid that a new offensive from Belarus could soon hit northern Ukraine. And that Belarusian soldiers will soon be able to fight alongside the Russian army on Ukrainian soil.
Many experts currently consider these scenarios to be unlikely, but at the same time they confirm the fundamentally important role that Belarus plays in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
