The rift between the SPD and the Greens in the coalition committee has a history.

Berlin Dusk is slowly falling over the banquet hall on the fifth floor of the Federal Chancellery. But despite 30 hours of negotiations, the leaders of the SPD, Greens and FDP still hadn’t clarified a central issue early on Tuesday evening: Should the construction of motorways be accelerated or not?

The Greens have taken a stand against it, and the FDP definitely wants it. A little later, around 8 p.m., the three party leaders announced: Acceleration for the Autobahn will be limited to certain projects, but it will come. The coalition committee ends with another low blow for the Greens.
