How big is the danger for the German economy?

Dusseldorf The mood in German companies has improved for the first time since June. The Ifo business climate index rose to 95.7 in January from 94.8 in December. While hospitality is still struggling, industry in particular is recovering. Overall, according to the Ifo Institute, the situation with supply bottlenecks is easing. Nevertheless, the companies would plan further price increases.

“The German economy is starting the new year with a glimmer of hope,” says Clemens Fuest, commenting on the results. In an interview, the President of the Ifo Institute explains where companies draw this optimism from in the midst of the fourth Omicron wave, high inflation and the energy crisis and how sustainable it is. He also makes an appeal to the ECB and the federal government.
