Hope for billions in funding for German car manufacturers: US government plans raw material agreement

Berlin According to Handelsblatt information, European car and battery manufacturers can still hope for billions from the US subsidy program Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

So far, e-cars from Europe have been excluded from a large part of the total of 370 billion dollars in American subsidies for climate-neutral industrial technologies. The reason for this is the requirement of the government of US President Joe Biden that the raw materials for batteries funded by the program must come from North America.

But Washington is now about to lift this rule for EU countries. The US government has therefore submitted a concept paper to the EU Commission that proposes a transatlantic raw materials partnership. The Handelsblatt had access to the details of the confidential paper entitled “Target Agreement on Critical Minerals”.
