High-tech for the world market is increasingly rare in Germany

Berlin Singapore instead of Burghausen, that has meanwhile become the credo of the Siltronic company. Founded around 50 years ago in the small town in Upper Bavaria, the company is now orienting itself towards Asia. Siltronic is investing two billion euros in a new factory there, the largest investment in the company’s history. It produces so-called wafers, disks made of silicon from which chips are made.

Siltronic is the only German manufacturer of this important pre-product for the semiconductor industry. And even with German ownership it could soon be over. The Taiwanese competitor Global Wafers is about to take over Siltronic, according to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday.

Chips are just an example. The top technology as a whole has suffered a decline in Germany for decades. Germany’s share of high-tech goods exported worldwide has almost halved since 1990. This is shown by a study by the state-owned Society for Foreign Trade and Location Marketing (GTAI), which is available to the Handelsblatt.
