UC Riverside researchers have discovered a protein that controls when hair follicles die. Stating that it is possible to regrow hair when they reverse the process, the researchers said, “The protein in question can be defined as a signal protein that regulates the division, growth and death of cells. The protein called TGF-beta is also found in the cells inside the hair follicles.” made statements.
The protein, which also appears in important functions such as wound healing, is used by cancer cells for uncontrolled growth. Qixuan Wang, one of the study partners, said, “The TGF-beta protein has two opposing roles. It helps to activate some hair follicle cells to produce new life. It then plays a role in the regulation of apoptosis, the cell death process.” said.
When the right amount of TGF-beta is used, cell division becomes active. The protein, which stimulates follicle growth, allows hair follicles to grow. In cases where there is too much TGF-beta, the cells are directed to apoptosis, and baldness occurs with the death of hair follicles.
Continuing to investigate how TGF-beta activates cell division, the team began studies to determine how it communicates with related genes. The team also explained that even if the hair follicle kills itself, it does not affect the stem cell store.
